Thinking about Pilates?...JUMP ABOARD!
Pilates combines the flexibility of yoga, with the strength of calisthenics, to create the grace of a dancer. It was developed in 1920's by the legendary physical trainer, Joseph H. Pilates.Typical sessions are taught one-on-one with the use of spring-resistive machines referred to as the “Universal Reformer”, “Cadillac”, “Wunda Chair” and “Ladder Barrel”. This private session is highly specialized with a certified trainer qualified to tailor the exercises to your needs. Floor mat exercises are an integral part in the principles of Pilates, and are taught in conjunction with machine sessions, or in small group mat or Reformer classes.
Who is Joseph Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates predicted in the 1950’s, that the Pilates method is what people need and will want in the new millennium.Born in Germany in 1881, he was a frail child dedicated to becoming stronger. Pilates trained as a swimmer, dancer, gymnast, boxer, and later studied yoga and Zen meditation. During World War I, he served as an assistant with physical rehabilitation in a British war camp. He devised a way for the wounded soldiers to begin exercising, while lying on their backs.
This system formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning, which he brought to New York City when he opened his first studio in 1926.
WHY PILATES?
Pilates is typically taught in a quiet atmosphere to induce greater concentration. The connection between the mind and the exercises performed are at the core of Pilates. This gentler discipline leaves a feeling of exhilaration at the end of a session, rather than of exhaustion.
Pilates has also been integrated into rehabilitation programs. Patients, who are ready for more rigorous regimens, but not yet ready for the gym, benefit by using Pilates on the machines. Without using an injured area initially, and because there is no strain on the joints, supporting muscles are strengthened to create structural balance and speed recovery.
